New Brittenpassage at Amsterdam Zuid Station Opens on 1 November

Date
29 October 2026

On 1 November 2026, the Brittenpassage, the new entrance to Amsterdam Zuid Station, will officially open. The station’s transformation is part of Zuidasdok, one of the largest infrastructure projects in the Netherlands, with the architectural design by Team V Architecture, ZJA Architects & Engineers and BoschSlabbers Landscape Architects.

Festival in the Minervapassage
On the opening day, the current passage – Minervapassage – will receive a festive farewell. Between 12:00 and 17:00, the passage will be transformed into a festival venue, hosting architecture tours, workshops and activities. View the full programme here.

Room for Growth
Amsterdam Zuid is the fastest-growing railway station in the Netherlands. Passenger numbers are expected to increase from 80,000 today to 300,000 per day by 2030. The existing entrance, the Minervapassage, is already struggling to accommodate the growing number of passengers. Located approximately 200 metres away, the new 15-metre-wide Brittenpassage provides additional capacity, with lifts, escalators, shops and bicycle parking for 2,000 bikes. Following the opening, the Minervapassage will close for several years to undergo a major transformation.

A Clear and Accessible Station
Jeroen van Schooten (architect Zuidasdok): “Amsterdam Zuid Station should become both an efficient and comfortable transport hub and a vibrant urban centre, with spacious passageways and a covered shopping area. Slender canopies, wide passageways and a calm palette of soft grey tones will ensure that the station remains easy to navigate, even during peak hours.”

With passengers and cyclists approaching from all directions, the station is designed to have no back sides, only welcoming fronts.

Once the transformation is complete, Amsterdam Zuid Station will feature two spacious entrances and indoor bicycle parking facilities with a combined capacity of 6,500 spaces, directly connected to the city’s main cycling network.
