The House of Province Gelderland in Arnhem has won the National Steel Award 2018 in the category ‘Characteristic steel components’. That was announced on 3 October during the National Steel Construction Day at Tata Steel in IJmuiden. Architect Irène Horvers from Team V and constructive designer Arjan Habraken from SIDstudio were present to receive the award on behalf of the design team.
Steel roof
The project was nominated for the ingenious steel construction of the roof covering the former courtyard of the monumental House of the Province. The jury writes: “Due to the contrifugal design of pressure rods with LED lighting, the construction looks more like design lighting than a constructive intervention. The air cushions and the slender dimensioning of the structural parts in and on the roof do not interrupt with the existing construction. The roof looks more like a late execution of the original design than a recent steel design. An exceptionally good choice to design a complex tensegrity instead of a simple beam grid with glass panels. It is an honorabel solution tot the transformation task.”
National Steel Awards
The National Steel Awards are granted every two years to construction projects in steel in the Netherlands or by Dutch companies. The jury chose winners in five categories; Non-residential building, Industrial building, Residential building, Infrastructure and Characteristic steel components. A National Sustainability Award for Steel was also awarded across all categories. View all winners on the website of the National Steel Award 2018.
