In November 2014 the New University Building for VU University Amsterdam acquired a BREEAM Excellent design certificate. For this occasion BREEAM Magazine interviewed, among othes, project leader Peter Schumacher from Royal HaskoningDHV and architect Barry van Waveren from Team V about how this BREEAM Excellent certificate has been achieved.
The main conclusion is that BREEAM is a good instrument to measure sustainability, but that making a great building should remain the main goal. Peter Schumacher’s advise: “Start thinking about the implementation of the BREEAM rules in an early stage. Some rules are rigid, some are adaptive. Pursue sustainability according to your own beliefs, without compromising because of the rules. There is always a good solution. BREEAM is a good instrument to measure and provide insight in sustainability, but remember to work together to achieve the right goals.”
