Two new renovation projects at Eindhoven University of Technology

Date
19 February 2019

The renovation design of university buildings ‘Gemini’ and ‘Laplace’ has been awarded to Team V Architecture, Royal HaskoningDHV and DGMR, a partnership called TW-IN. The two projects were simultaneously yet separately tendered as Total Engineering assignments. In January 2019, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) announced that TW-IN received the winning bid for both projects. Team V Architecture is also responsible for the design of the renovated main building ‘Atlas’, which will be officially opened on the 21st of March.

Respectful renovations
The ‘Gemini building’ is being renovated on a large scale in order to meet the ambitions of TU/e in the fields of sustainability, technology, education and research. It retains its current function as the centre of the Mechanical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering departments.
The ‘Laplace’ building, the former Computing Center, will be transformed into a campus-wide ‘Education Center’ with lecture halls and study workspaces for students from all departments. In both projects the aim is to renovate respectfully to new build level and to obtain a BREEAM Excellent certificate for sustainability.

Connection ‘Laplace’ and ‘Gemini’
The buildings Laplace (1972, 12.000 m2) and Gemini (1974, 34.000 m2) were designed by architect and urban designer S.J. van Embden as part of the second construction phase of the TU/e campus. In the winning vision, Total Engineer TW/IN propose a new entrance for both buildings, located on the De Zaale side, the main access route of the campus. Gemini, which currently is positioned with its back to De Zaale, will receive a second entrance towards Laplace, so that the connection between Laplace and the campus heart on the ‘Groene Loper’ (green pedestrian route) is reinforced.

TW-IN on the TU/e Campus
The Eindhoven University of Technology has been working on a large-scale renewal of the campus for several years now. The team members of TW-IN are no strangers to the TU/e. Team V Architecture is responsible for the design of the recently renovated Atlas building, which will be officially opened on 21st of March 2019. Atlas is one of the most sustainable renovated educational buildings in the world and has won the International BREEAM Award 2017 (category ‘Education & Healthcare’). Royal HaskoningDHV and DGMR were part of the design team for the ‘Flux building’ (2015), which is connected to Gemini by a walkway. Royal HaskoningDHV set up of the program of requirements, end users support and managed the design team for the DGMR contributed to Flux with advice for building physics, fire safety and sustainability.
