Opening social housing project The August Amsterdam

Date
17 January 2025

Thursday 16th of January, social housing block The August officially opened. The art works, ceramic lamps and stools, by designer Kiki van Eijk were lit for the very first time by a resident and one of the ceramic workshop creators. Almost all residents and many team members that worked on the project for the last four years were present. After the opening ceremony we toasted on this successful project.

The August by Ymere is one of five social housing projects in the new residential area Overhoeks in Amsterdam-Noord. The challenge was to create affordable houses, aesthetically competing with the surrounding luxury residential complexes. Coming home, feeling at home and soft surroundings were important design themes. We are proud to have worked with great designers Kiki van Eijk and landscape architects Buro Sant en Co for art works in the courtyard, where architecture, nature and art merge into one. Large, terracotta-coloured pebbles are laid out in the landscape and form different seating areas. The pebble shape is reflected in the garden design and in the terracotta ceramic light elements, which contrast with the green glazed plinth facade.
