The projects Zuidasdok – a new public transport hub in Amsterdam, and HAUT – the 21-storey wooden hybrid residential tower in Amsterdam – are both on the shortlist for the World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards 2018. Zuidasdok is nominated in the category ‘Infrastructure- Future Project’ and HAUT in the category ‘Residential – Future Project’.
Zuidasdok is a project of Rijkswaterstaat, ProRail and the municipality of Amsterdam. It will improve the accessibility of the Amsterdam Zuidas district and the northern part of the Randstad, both by public transport and by road. This will partly be achieved by expanding Amsterdam Zuid Station. The station will become a compact and high-quality public transport terminal where all forms of transport meet. The contract for the construction of Zuidasdok has been awarded to ZuidPlus: the joint venture of Fluor, HOCHTIEF, Heijmans.
ZuidPlus Architects – a collaboration between Team V Architecture, ZJA Zwarts & Jansma Architects and Bosch Slabbers Landscape Architects – and is responsible for the architectural and landscape design.
The innovative wooden hybrid high-rise construction and the energy-generating facades make HAUT a prototype of innovative, sustainable construction. HAUT stands for ‘haute couture’: tailor-made architecture. The façade is characterized by strong, clear lines of light grey floor bands and tall windows, with an apparently random pattern of cantilevering balconies. The wooden finishing underneath the balconies and the pronounced projections at the sharp building corner facing the River Amstel make HAUT’s architecture strikingly distinctive.
The World Architecture Festival is being held in Amsterdam end of November this year at the RAI. The winners will be announced at the festival.
