Rabobank Campus
A Sustainable Expansion in Utrecht
Rabobank is developing its headquarters on Croeselaan in Utrecht into an extension of the Rabobank Campus with new offices and residential buildings. Team V designed both the urban masterplan and the architectural design. The campus will be developed on the Matser site, part of the ambitious redevelopment around Utrecht Central Station. Together with the Beurskwartier, Lombokplein, and Dichterswijk, this area will form the new city center on the west side of Utrecht Central by 2040. The site creates a vital link between the dynamic station district and the quieter Dichterswijk. Here, a green, sustainable, and accessible urban zone will emerge, with generous public spaces and partially accessible inner courtyards.
Program and Layout
The campus will consist of multiple office and residential buildings, connected by a promenade and a central courtyard. The existing Zilver building will be preserved and transformed into a contemporary office that aligns with Rabobank’s circular ambitions. Along Jan van Foreeststraat, 145 housing units will be built, connecting seamlessly to the municipality’s planned residential complex. The plinths will house amenities such as restaurants, a fitness center, and event spaces. A bicycle parking facility will be located beneath the Zilver building, while a parking garage will be situated beneath the offices and garden. All buildings form a cohesive ensemble, yet can also function independently.
Architecture and Sustainability
The architecture is consistent and of high quality, featuring abundant greenery on façades and rooftops. The Rabobank Campus is a sustainable addition to the city, linking Croeselaan, Kruisvaart, and Dichterswijk. The relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces is strengthened with cascading staircases and planting. Transparent façades and skylights provide natural daylight and clear sightlines. The glazed entrances and skylights reference the Dutch greenhouse landscape.
Green Connections and Outdoor Spaces
The ground floor is the most public part of the complex, including the reception area, co-working facilities, and event spaces. The plinth acts as the central meeting point of the renewed campus. A striking stair structure runs through the building, connecting multifunctional spaces and creating a linking route. The plan introduces new walking paths and a green elevated promenade between the Zilver building and the new development. The roof of the plinth building will be attractively designed and will in the future be connected to the ‘Forum’ – an elevated walkway alongside the railway. The public and semi-public outdoor spaces will offer places for meeting, interaction, and relaxation.
