Lansingerland-Zoetermeer Station

The urban context usually provides pointers for an architectural design. This is however not the case with Lansingerland-Zoetermeer railway station. Here, the design provides pointers for a future context. The station is located just outside Zoetermeer, over the railway line between Gouda and The Hague, which runs parallel to the A12 motorway. The station forms the heart of a complex intersection of railway lines, light rail and bus routes, bike lanes and motorway.

Raised avenue

The Lansingerland-Zoetermeer railway station consists of a green viaduct over 40 meters wide and 190 meters long. The bridge deck accommodates a light rail stop and a crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. In The Hague and Zoetermeer light rail commonly travels along leafy avenues. The bridge is grafted seamlessly onto this natural network thanks to its trees, hedges and grass. The detailed fencing along the bridge and deck incorporates a razor sharp pattern of branches, executed in high-strength concrete specially developed for this project.

Public transport hub

Spacious flights of stairs, a ramp and glass elevators all smoothly connect the raised avenue to the station below and the wider surroundings. Waiting areas have high ceilings with plenty of daylight and a staggered pattern of LED lights on the timber ceiling provides a warm atmosphere. Lansingerland-Zoetermeer station boasts exceptionally high quality finishes compared with other regional railway stations. Clear sight lines and cut-through views ensure travelers quickly reach their destination in a logical manner.

Future-proof

The design anticipates expansion and growth. The station can accommodate a kiosk in future. Space has also been reserved for additional railway tracks and the proposed widening of the A12. The light rail currently terminates at this station, but the line will be extended to Rotterdam in coming years, at which point the bike lane can also be extended.
