Date
24 March 2022

From March 23 to April 13 2022, five concept designs for the Central Library of Rotterdam will be exhibited. The designs are displayed in the hall of the Central Library and on www.nieuwecentralebibliotheekrotterdam.nl. The people of Rotterdam are invited to give their opinion by means of a questionnaire. Will you vote too? The assessment committee takes all responses into account. The winner will be announced in July 2022.

Design teams

In November 2021 the Municipality of Rotterdam selected five design teams to make a concept design for the Central Library. The participating teams are:

  • Combination KCAP / Schmidt Hammer Lassen / Drees & Sommer
  • Kraaijvanger Architects
  • NL Architects
  • Powerhouse Company
  • Team VALADEZ

Team VALADEZ consists of Team V, ALA Architects, Deerns, ZUS, Crimson Historians & Urbanists, Peutz, Van Rossum en IGG.

Grand renovation

In a modern library is a lot more to do than just borrowing books. It is a place where you can discover, relax, study and work. In order to be able to facilitate these activities in the future, for everyone, the Central Library is being renovated.

The current Central Library opened in 1983. After almost 40 years of intensive use it is in urgent need of renovation. The building is technically dated and no longer fits the function of a modern library, which should be a central place in the city for Rotterdam residents to come together. That is why the building is being renovated and made more sustainable. Also the outdoor space and the connection to the city center will be improved.
