Atlas wins Dirk Roosenburg Award 2019

Date
25 October 2019

The main building of the Eindhoven University of Technology, Atlas, has won the Dirk Roosenburg Award 2019, both the jury award and the public choice prize. The design of Team RSVP – Team V Architecture, Van Rossum, Valstar Simonis and Peutz – for Atlas is with its “special attention to sustainability and a clear and powerful architecture the calling card of the transformation of the TU/e campus into an open science park of international allure”, according to the jury report. “Team RSVP respected the architecture of Van Embden with innovative and daring architectural interventions”. The building is one of the most sustainable education buildings in the world. This is due to the reuse but also to the addition of a smart glass facade, a healthy working environment, lots of daylight and energy-efficient systems for heating, lighting and solar panels. The jury is also positive about the interior design that was thoughtfully designed by the same design team.

About Atlas

The robust
TU/e main building from 1963 has been transformed into a transparent and
energy-efficient university building. The design of Atlas combines optimum
reuse with state-of-the-art materials and smart technology. The result is an
intelligent building that can adapt to future developments, so that it is also
“smart” in 2050.

Dirk Roosenburg Award 2019

The Dirk
Roosenburg Award is named after the architect (1887-1962) who worked for
Philips. For example, he designed the Witte Dame, the Philips Business School
Kastanjelaan, the Natlab at Strijp-S and was also involved in the design of the
Lichttoren. The biennial architecture award – an initiative of the municipality
of Eindhoven and organized by Architectuurcentrum Eindhoven – was awarded on
Friday 25 October by alderman Yasin Torunoglu in the NatLab on the
Kastanjelaan.
